I developed The Healing and Harming Garden project to demonstrate how a garden can be both a material and conceptual space to promote the core principles of an Environmental Humanities education. The first phase of the garden project, “The Otherworldly and the Ornamental,” intertwines stories of Datura, Brugmansia, and Solandra plant usage to illuminate the critical role of Indigenous knowledge in shaping global spiritual, medicinal, and political history. The Healing and Harming Garden Project emphasizes that landscape can be read as a text and that the physical garden plot can be an outdoor classroom for integrated learning across the sciences and the humanities. By bridging disciplinary divides, the project brings together faculty and students from across UCLA’s campus with an interest in the ways humans interact with the environment. In 2023 the project also supported high school students from the Anawakalmekak Indigenous Peoples School allowing them to investigate the stories that bind plants and peoples together.
